Dear Sir/Madame,
People may already be aware about the case in which one Palestinian and five Bulgarian medics were sentenced to death in Libya recently, charged with deliberately infecting 400 Libyan children with the HIV virus. Their detention and trial has been of great concern to human rights campaigners: the prisoners have been tortured - in the case of two of the nurses raped - and the large body of independent evidence that supports their innocence has not been considered in court. Given the current state of international politics, however, the case has received very little attention in the media, and time is running out for the prisoners. It seems that very few people are interested in the plight of five Bulgarians and a Palestinian, condemned to death in an African country.
I would be grateful if you would consider paying a visit to: http://www.nishand.org
This is a new website where you will find details about the background to the case, and about an upcoming fundraising concert in London - starring Lili Ivanova and Vassil Naidenov - that is being staged for the benefit of the medics and their families. (There is also a forum on the site and links to online petitions.) One of the aims of the Bulgarian Medics Solidarity Project is to try and focus the international spotlight (and the pressure that brings) on the unfair nature of the charges and trial; the torture and detention of the prisoners; and the subsequent death sentence they have received. I would be grateful if anyone reading this could try and raise theissue with their local elected representatives. Many of you will be unable to attend the concert. However, if you would like to make a donation, or have a business that wishes to be a sponsor of the event, it is possible to do this via the site. There is also a printable contribution sheet, should anyone wish to do some fundraising within their own community. Any suggestions as to where else to publicise this event would be extremely welcome! Please do visit the forum, if possible; air your views and suggestions there, and let us know if you can help in any way. I wish you all the best and thank you for your time.
